U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Event: Free "SAFETY Act" Seminar

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has agreed to put on a free, one day SAFETY Act seminar in San Diego on Monday, July 27, 2009 beginning at 9:00 am in Room 310 in the San Diego County Administration Building located at 1600 Pacific Highway. This is a very important opportunity to learn about the SAFETY (Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies) Act, which is intended to provide critical incentives for the development and deployment of anti-terrorism technologies (including products, services, and software) by providing liability protections for Sellers of "qualified anti-terrorism technologies." The providers can be U.S. or foreign companies and the liability protection covers installations on U.S. soil. The existence of SAFETY Act approval will constitute an increasingly important competitive marketing advantage. A team of specialists from Washington DC will be in San Diego to conduct this seminar, which is expected to draw companies from southern California, the Southwest and international companies interested in the topic. The Security Network is pleased to join with the San Diego chapters of AFCEA and NDIA, and the San Diego Regional EDC to make companies aware of this "not-to-be-missed" event. The SAFETY Act overview will be presented from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The SAFETY Act staff will be available for consultations from 1:00-5:00 pm. For more information, Google "SAFETY Act" or visit the official website at: http://www.safetyact.gov.

"BioFuels, BioMedicines & Farming from the Sea... and Maritime Technologies Needed to Develop Them - the intersection of two San Diego growth industries"

    Presentations, Panel Discussion and Q&A:
Paul Jensen, Ph.D. - Associate Research Scientist, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Don Kent, M.S. - President, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute
Shannon J. Williamson, Ph.D. - Dir. of Environmental Virology, J. Craig Venter Institute

The world's oceans hold the promise of miracle cures as well as abundant energy and food. Underwater bioprospecting is, however, difficult and expensive. New technologies such as deep sea ROVs will facilitate broader, faster and more extensive exploration. San Diego has world-class universities and research labs focused on the marine environment. It also has pioneering scientists such as Paul Jensen and Don Kent, biotech companies with a focus on natural products, and explorers such as Shannon Williamson who are attempting to understand the deepest ocean communities. San Diego is truly one of the world's leading biotechnology centers AND one of the world's leading maritime technology centers. The Security Network and CfMSS have organized this special gathering to promote collaboration between these two important communities. The reward will be faster discovery & development cycles as well as enhanced economic prosperity for San Diego, the country and the world.

Interested parties should contact Bill Riedy, Program Manager of The Security Network, at 619-450-4600 x182.

    “CyberSecurity Collaboration Summit”

“Fostering Innovation through Collaboration” is the tag line of The Security Network and Information Assurance and CyberSecurity are areas of particular focus for The Security Network.  As a result, we were pleased to be a principal sponsor of the “CyberSecurity Collaboration Summit” on Thursday, Nov. 20, which followed on the heels of the major MILCOM 2008 show.  San Diego benefits from the presence of SPAWAR and SSC Pacific both of which have deep experience and focus on IA and CyberSecurity.  As Mike Davis, IA Technical Authority for the U.S. Navy, lead organizer of the “CyberSecurity Collaboration Summit,” and Technical Advisor to The Security Network, said: “The reason we must collaborate is that to be maximally effective in this complex and resource constrained security environment – we all must have a common end-state IT/IA/security focus and gain consensus when it comes to answering the question, ‘What really matters in IA?  As the world moves toward service-oriented architecture (SOA), minimizing differences in IA methods becomes ever more critical.  This is as true for the private and non-military government sectors as for the military.”
