Founded in 2002 by RADM Stuart Platt and Mark Ott, Harbor Wing Technilogies Inc. is developing its Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessel (AUSV) to perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and other missions for the Navy, including environmental law compliance and anti-piracy/anti-intruder operations, at far lower cost than conventional ships, aircraft or helicopters by eliminating on-board personnel and the use of fossil fuel.  Our technology demonstrator prototype passed its sea trials in Hawaii in June 2007 and is being operated and upgraded in Navy facilities at Ford Island.  The production AUSV will be a tri-hull vessel fifty feet long and fifty feet wide, with a sixty-foot-high aerodynamic hard airfoil WingSail and robotics technology that will enable it to sail itself along a predetermined GPS-based course; to provide persistent area coverage within designated coordinates; or to be controlled remotely from a command station on a ship or on shore.  It will be capable of operating with and controlling an unmanned aerial system such as Insitu’s Scan Eagle or ACR’s Silver Fox aircraft.  The AUSV platform will have the power and carrying capacity to deploy government-furnished mission-specific sensors and communications equipment and to act as a netted unit in UV Sentry or FORCEnet architectures.

Spark’s DIOS (Distributed Integration Operating Schema) is an Information Exchange tool dedicated to resolve the complex problem of communicating information between heterogeneous technologies. Using DIOS, engineers can build communication frameworks for various electronic systems to exchange information (1) between components to form integrated device networks, (2) with command, control and communications systems and (3) with centralized systems such as the enterprise service buses (ESBs).

Typical scenarios involve ‘edge’ devices such as sensors, so-called since they sit at the edge of complex information networks. For example, Spark has worked in robotics where scenarios include intra-robot links (sensors and other devices within a specific UxV), inter-robot communication (collaboration between sensors on different UxVs) and the integration of devices into centralized systems to create powerful ‘systems of systems’. DIOS disintermediates each component and manages environmental issues that complicate interoperability. DIOS cuts through barriers at the following levels:

1. Transport – allowing components to leverage all available network paths
2. Hardware –resolving differences between hardware platforms
3. OS – enabling communications between different operating systems/versions
4. Code – automating native code generation to allow developers to work in each system’s native programming language
5. Distribution – managing the distribution to different targets, dynamic information routing/messaging and information matching
